Early Inspiration: Josh’s passion for photography and adventuring began at a young age, thanks to his father. Every Saturday morning, the two would venture out into the wilderness, camera in hand, seeking out landscapes, waterfalls, and the wonders of nature. It was not the photography itself that inspired Josh—it was the time spent with his dad and their shared love for the outdoors. This father-son tradition planted the seed that would grow into his wildlife photography and overlanding pursuits later on in life.

Josh’s leap of faith into full-time photography and overlanding came after years of working as a Sheriff Deputy on 3rd shift. During the quiet hours between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., with nothing but open farm fields around him, Josh would sit in his squad car and watch wildlife videos on YouTube. It was during these moments that he discovered Morten Hilmer, a wildlife photographer who became a major influence on Josh’s love for the outdoors and pursuit of wildlife photography. Taking trips and staying in Airbnbs never felt close enough to nature, so he decided that overlanding—with a camper—was the perfect way to fully immerse himself in the wild and share those unique experiences with the world and more specifically, with the animals.

Josh Lichter Eagle SoaringEarly Adventures: One of Josh’s earliest adventures was a winter trip to Lock and Dam 14 on the Illinois-Indiana border. Braving sub-zero temperatures, he and his father stood in awe as eagles flocked to the icy waters. Despite the cold, Josh felt completely at home, knowing that these were the kinds of moments he lived for—pure, raw, and connected to nature.

Recent Adventures: In the past year, Josh has taken his overlanding adventures to new heights. Earlier in the year, he ventured to Yellowstone National Park, where he observed coyotes and newly born bison calves. The bison coats were still a soft red instead of the deep brown of adulthood.

Another memorable trip took him to Badlands National Park, where he encountered wild bison and sheep, though the sheep population is unfortunately in decline due to pneumonia. Each of these journeys continues to deepen Josh’s appreciation for the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.

Most Memorable Adventure: Without a doubt, Josh’s most memorable adventure happened in 2019 at the Grand Tetons. After hearing about the famous bear known as “399,” he found himself among hundreds of photographers waiting for a glimpse. However, something didn’t feel right, so he trusted his instincts and ventured off alone with his wife. His decision paid off when he encountered a female moose giving birth—not to just one calf, but two. Witnessing this rare moment of twins taking their first steps was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it reinforced his belief in following his gut and carving his own path. Check out the twins here.

Challenges Faced: Josh’s biggest challenges come from timing his trips during the winter, as his wedding photography business keeps him busy in the summer and fall. Winter conditions have also tested his resolve, like the time a trip to Badlands National Park took 28 hours to return due to icy roads, or when he had to navigate through Wyoming’s closed roads during a severe storm while picking up his camper. These experiences have taught him the value of preparation, leading him to carefully upgrade his truck with better tires, airbags, and shocks for stability. His law enforcement training in vehicle control has also helped him overcome tough driving conditions.

Upcoming Trips: Josh and Lindsay live for spontaneity. Their next potential adventure might be a trip to Minnesota, but nothing is ever set in stone. Thanks to their overlanding setup, they can hit the road at a moment’s notice, leaving behind the constraints of rigid plans to chase the unknown.

Lessons Learned: For Josh, overlanding has been about more than just exploring new places—it has taught him the value of living in the moment. In a world that often encourages us to rush to the next goal, overlanding has become a way for him to slow down, breathe, and truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds him. His adventures in nature remind him to savor every moment, no matter how small, because that is where life’s greatest treasures are often found.

Community Involvement: While Josh treasures solitude in nature, he shares his passion with the broader community through his wildlife photography. His work offers a window into the beauty of the natural world, inspiring others to seek out their own adventures and appreciate the magic that lies in the great outdoors.

Fun Fact: Josh and Lindsay are middle school sweethearts, growing from childhood friends into lifelong partners in both life and adventure. While their relationship has evolved over the years, their shared love for nature, photography, and spontaneous road trips has remained constant. Josh feels incredibly lucky to have found someone who shares his wildest dreams.
